Night shift 4

Lori with Vladimir the Anesthesiologist. I think it's a loose term in Ukraine, though, because tonight he is the ICU doctor.

Vlad, hard at work writing orders for us.

Normal Ukrainian bedside set up.

Here's the call room where we get to take a nap during our shift.

How do I chart in Russian?!

Bedside rounds with whole staff.

Entrance to ICU.

Waking up the first case back this evening.
Lori from Nashville with Eva.

Yard behind hospital

Big Maksim, 13 years.

Eva, again.

Angelina in her favorite position, holding a bottle.

Every morning this lady comes to change dressings. I'm not sure of the significance of the hat, but I like it.

Little Maksim. Today is his first day of life.

I was teaching the Ukrainians the importance of swaddling.

We have a new Eva tonight. She's much calmer and quieter than the other Eva. Hmm. Our loud Eva should take notes.

Sunrise!

Good morning, Maksim. It's your second day in this world. Today Maksim goes to surgery.

Stella. 1st case, still intubated. Looks like she may have pneumonia. Sad face. She's stable and doing slightly better this morning.

Morning in the ICU. We have done 11 surgeries so far with 3 more today.

Timophey is not impressed with us, though.

Eva remains skeptical as well.

Night shift 3 (don't worry I'll be here all week)

Christina, 5 years. This is her 4th heart surgery.

Snow! It snowed 2 inches last night. It's slushy and gross, though. The weather is very Ohio.

The hospital's advertisement for it's new CAT scan machine.

Reading Xrays.

Yum!

Yum, yum. Vladimir's (the Anesthesiologist) wife (also an Anesthesiologist) made us food.

Stella. Day 1's 1st case. Still intubated. She's doing better. Hopefully she will get the tube out today.

Eva.

Angelina after 8oz of formula.

Night shift #2

Darn it!

Back door to hospital.

Eva, 1 year. Doing very well.

Karina, 5 years. "wants to go home...now"

Angelina, 1 year. Fussy, fussy, fussy.

Ukrainian food. Yum yum!

Potato and Mushroom dumplings.

Bread with garlic spread and beer!

Borsch.

Chicken ground, fried, and balled and potatoes extra butter. I had to dig in before I took the picture.

Before work tonight, we went to this fancy Ukrainian restaurant. These are the menus.

Decor in the restaurant.

Welcome to Ukraine!

This is the building we are staying in. #33 on the 8th floor. It's very nice.

This is the street in front. Those are light rail wires. Drivers are crazy!

Lori's and my bedroom. It's king size which takes the sting out of sharing.

There's a little Russian Orthodox chapel in front of the hospital.

Siblings playing in the hallway.

Stairs. The ICU is on the 6th floor. The OR is on the 8th. Whew.

The ORs have a gallery we can watch the operations from. The guy tying his hat is Chris Gilbert, a Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon from Memphis. He's very kind.

1st case of the 1st day, Stella. She is the one on the table above.

Nurses working in the ICU. They are very good here.

Day 5

The Euphrates at night.

Rammla.

Sajad. 9 months.

Dr. Rao doing an Echocardiogram on my patient.

Conference room at the hospital.
Baby Hussein and momma.

Rammla. One of my favorites.

Me with Rammla. You can see that she's pretty malnourished. It's not lack of food here, but lack of education. She's 18 months, but her mother is still breastfeeding her. Her mother's milk must have run out a while ago. We have been working hard with her to make sure Rammla gets the nutrition she needs. She will probably be a little delayed because of her weight.

Sajad. I spent most of my day at his bedside. He's pretty sick, but doing better.

Day 8. Half Day!

Reading a CT scan in Iraq.

Sajad is extubated! His mom is so happy.

Hospital from the roof.

Ruqua (pronounced Ra-kay-a) during surgery.
Nisiriyah from the hospital roof.

Nina in the OR.

Sajad sleeping. He looks so good with his breathing tube out.
